Valley of Flowers

Valley of Flowers

Uttarakhand

14,100 ft📅 6 days💰 ₹6,000–₹11,000

A UNESCO World Heritage Site that comes alive every July and August. Over 600 species of wildflowers bloom in this remote Himalayan valley — including the rare Brahmakamal, Himalayan blue poppy, and acres of primula and marsh marigold. The trek itself is easy, the base village of Ghangaria has comfortable guesthouses, and the optional Hemkund Sahib pilgrimage adds cultural depth. Perfect for nature lovers, photographers, and families.

How to Reach

The valley is in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. Nearest railheads: Rishikesh (230 km) or Haridwar (270 km). Buses from Rishikesh bus stand to Joshimath run daily (₹300–400, 8–10 hrs). From Joshimath, shared taxis to Govindghat take 30 minutes (₹80–100 per seat). The trek starts at Govindghat at 6,000 ft. Alternatively, fly to Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun) and hire a taxi directly to Govindghat (about 10 hours, ₹3,500–4,500 for the whole cab).

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Govindghat to Ghangaria (14 km, ~6–7 hrs on foot): A well-made stone trail follows the Lakshman Ganga river all the way up. You can walk (full day) or take ponies (₹700–900 one way) or helicopter (₹1,200 one way). Ghangaria at 10,000 ft has hotels, dhabas, a medical post, and ATM facilities.

Day 2 — Ghangaria to Valley of Flowers and back (10 km round trip, ~4–5 hrs): The valley entrance is 4 km from Ghangaria. Once inside, the trail is flat and the valley opens up to 10 km long and 2 km wide. Spend 2–3 hours walking through the blooms. Return to Ghangaria.

Day 3 — Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib (6 km one way, ~4 hrs): A steep climb to the Sikh shrine at 14,100 ft on the shores of a glacial lake. The Gurudwara offers free langar (meals). Spectacular snow-peak views. Return to Ghangaria.

Day 4 — Second visit to the valley or explore: Different sections bloom at different times in the season. The upper valley and north-facing slopes often have flowers that were not blooming on Day 2. Also visit the Laxman Ganga waterfall near Ghangaria.

Day 5 — Ghangaria to Govindghat, travel back: Descend in the morning (3–4 hrs). From Govindghat, continue to Joshimath, Rishikesh, or Badrinath (30 km away).

Day 6 — Buffer / travel day.

What to Pack

• Light to medium trekking clothing (layers for early morning and evening, t-shirt for midday)

• Light waterproof rain jacket (afternoon showers are very common in July–August)

• Comfortable waterproof trekking shoes (the trail can be wet and muddy)

• Warm fleece for evenings at Ghangaria (temperature drops to 8–12°C at night)

• A camera — macro lens or good zoom recommended for wildflower close-ups

• Water bottles and purification tablets

• Personal first aid kit

• Leech socks (leeches are common on the Govindghat–Ghangaria trail in July–August)

• Entry permit (purchased at forest check post at Pulna, just before Ghangaria)

Best Time to Visit

July 1 to August 31 for the full bloom. Peak bloom is typically between July 15 and August 15. September is good for late-blooming species and clearer skies but the main show is over. The valley is officially closed from November to April due to snow. Do not come in June — flowers have not bloomed yet and the trail from Pulna to Ghangaria can be icy.

Where to Stay & Eat

Ghangaria has about 10–15 guesthouses ranging from basic to comfortable (₹500–1,500 per room/night). Book in advance for July–August peak season as rooms fill up fast. Local dhabas serve dal, rice, chapati, Maggi, and chai throughout the day. The Sikh Gurudwara at Ghangaria also provides free langar (simple vegetarian meals) for any visitor — one of the highlights of the trip.

Permits & Entry Fees

Valley of Flowers National Park entry fee: ₹150 per day for Indian visitors, ₹600 per day for foreign nationals. Permits are purchased at the forest department counter at Pulna (about 500 m before Ghangaria). Camera fees: ₹100 for still cameras, ₹500 for video. Keep your permit slip with you inside the valley — rangers check regularly. The permit is only valid for the date of entry and is not transferable.

Fitness Level Required

Easy to moderate. The hardest section is the 14 km climb from Govindghat to Ghangaria (3,000 ft gain). Inside the valley, the trail is flat and easy. The Hemkund Sahib trail is steeper (3,000 ft more gain). Suitable for senior citizens, children above 8 years, and complete beginners. The pony option makes the Govindghat–Ghangaria section accessible to anyone.

Safety Tips

• Do not pick or uproot any flowers — this is a strictly protected national park. Fines are heavy and strictly enforced.

• Stay on the designated trail inside the valley. The meadows look open but wandering off-trail damages delicate plant communities.

• Carry rain gear every day — afternoon rain in July–August is near-certain.

• Leeches are very active on the approach trail in monsoon — wear leech socks and check yourself after crossing grassy sections.

• If going to Hemkund Sahib, take it slowly on the ascent. At 14,100 ft, altitude sickness is possible even for young, fit people.

Photography Tips

• Visit the valley before 10 AM — soft morning light, no crowds, and the best wildflower colours.

• Bring a macro lens or clip-on macro for smartphones to capture individual flower details up close.

• The Brahmakamal (the large, white sacred flower) blooms most commonly in the upper valley closer to Hemkund Sahib.

• At Hemkund Lake, use a polarising filter to reduce glare on the glacial water and reveal the deep blue-green colour beneath.

• A wide-angle shot from the ridge at the valley entrance captures the full scale of the flower carpet with peaks above.

Full Budget Breakdown

• Delhi to Rishikesh bus: ₹250–400

• Rishikesh to Joshimath bus: ₹350

• Joshimath to Govindghat taxi: ₹100–150

• Govindghat to Ghangaria (pony): ₹700 | (walk): Free

• Ghangaria stay (4 nights, ₹600–1,200/night): ₹2,400–4,800

• Valley entry fee (3 days): ₹450

This is a challenging, 8-day high-altitude trek that rewards experienced trekkers with some of the most dramatic scenery in the Himalaya.

Operated by YHAI (Youth Hostels Association of India), it takes you through the beautiful village of Grahan, dense cedar forests, wide snow meadows, and over a 13,944 ft pass. The highlight is the legendary bum-slide — a long, fast slide down the snow on your backside instead of walking. Pure Himalayan fun, great for beginners and groups.
