Kheerganga

Kheerganga

Himachal Pradesh

9,711 ft📅 2 days💰 ₹4,000–₹6,500

The most rewarding weekend trek in Himachal Pradesh. After a 5–6 hour walk through the gorgeous Parvati Valley forest, you reach a Himalayan meadow at 9,711 ft with natural hot sulphur springs. Soak in the warm pool surrounded by snow peaks and open sky. Mythologically, this is where Lord Shiva meditated for thousands of years. Great for beginners, couples, and anyone who wants a quick, memorable mountain experience.

How to Reach

From Delhi, take an overnight bus to Bhuntar (12–13 hrs from ISBT Kashmere Gate, ₹700–950). From Bhuntar, a shared taxi to Kasol takes 45 minutes (₹60–80). From Kasol, another shared taxi goes to Barshaini in about 30 minutes (₹80–100 per seat). The trek starts from Barshaini. If driving, Barshaini is about 520 km from Delhi and takes 11–12 hours.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Barshaini to Kheerganga (12 km via Nakthan route, ~5–6 hrs): There are two main routes. The Nakthan route (via the village of Nakthan) is slightly longer at 12 km but has better shade and is more scenic. The Kalga route (via Kalga village) is shorter at 9 km but steeper. Most people go up via Nakthan and come down via Kalga. The trail follows the river for most of the way, passing the Rudranag waterfall at the halfway point. Arrive at Kheerganga meadow, set up camp or check into a wooden guesthouse. Evening soak in the hot springs (₹50–100 entry fee).

Day 2 — Morning soak and descent (3–4 hrs down): One more dip in the springs before the cold kicks in properly at dawn. Descend to Barshaini by noon and travel back to Kasol or onwards.

What to Pack

• Light day pack (5–7 kg total)

• Comfortable trekking or trail shoes (waterproof preferred)

• Light rain jacket

• Warm fleece or jacket for evening (temperatures at 9,700 ft drop sharply after sunset)

• Swimwear — you need it to enter the hot springs pool

• Quick-dry towel

• Headlamp (for camp at night or early morning)

• Water bottles (2L minimum)

• Trail snacks: energy bars, nuts, chocolates

• Small cash only — no ATMs beyond Kasol

• Personal first aid (blister plasters, pain relief)

Best Time to Visit

May–June and September–October are the best months for good weather and clear trails. July–August is doable but the trail gets muddy, leeches are active, and the meadow is often misty. January to March is for the adventurous — the trail is snow-covered and cold, but the hot springs feel magical in freezing weather. Avoid April when the snow is melting and the trail is slippery and wet.

Where to Stay & Eat

The Kheerganga meadow has several small wooden camps and guesthouses (₹400–800/night including basic meals). Book in advance during peak season (May–June, September–October) by calling local operators — numbers are shared on Kasol-area travel groups. Food options include instant noodles, dal-rice, omelette, bread-jam, and chai. Nothing fancy, but completely satisfying after a 12 km hike. The Gurudwara at Kheerganga meadow also offers free langar.

Permits & Entry Fees

Small park entry fee at Kheerganga: ₹50 per person (Indian nationals). Separate fee to use the hot spring pool: ₹50–100 (split between a free open pool and a ₹100 enclosed warm pool). No advance registration required. Just arrive and pay at the gate.

Fitness Level Required

Very easy — suitable for complete beginners, teenagers, and reasonably fit adults. The trail gains about 2,200 ft over 12 km, which is gradual and steady. If you can walk for 5–6 hours at a comfortable pace and are comfortable carrying a light backpack, you can do this trek. No special gear or training required.

Safety Tips

• Carry enough water — the middle section of the trail (between Nakthan village and the top) has limited clean water sources.

• The hot springs have two sections: an open mixed pool (cooler) and an enclosed segregated pool (warmer). Check the current setup at the gate when you arrive.

• Start before 8 AM to get the meadow largely to yourself and to avoid afternoon fog and cold winds.

• If visiting in monsoon season, check trail conditions before leaving — landslides occasionally block parts of the trail after heavy rain.

• Do not trek alone after dark — wildlife including Himalayan bears and leopards are present in the valley forests.

Photography Tips

• The Rudranag waterfall at the midpoint: green moss, white water, and forest backdrop — beautiful composition.

• Kheerganga meadow at dawn: mist hanging in the valley below, pastel sky, and distant snow peaks just catching the first light.

• The hot springs at night with a clear starry sky: use a tripod and try 5–10 second long exposures to capture both the steam rising from the pool and the stars above.

• Nakthan village on the way up: traditional Himachali stone houses with carved wooden balconies against apple orchards and mountains make for excellent architectural photography.

Full Budget Breakdown

• Delhi to Bhuntar overnight bus: ₹750–900

• Bhuntar to Kasol taxi: ₹80

• Kasol to Barshaini taxi: ₹80–100

• Stay at Kheerganga with meals (1 night): ₹800–1,400

• Hot springs entry: ₹100

• Trail snacks and water: ₹300–500

• Kasol pre/post stay and food (1–2 days): ₹800–1,500

• Return bus to Delhi: ₹750–900

Total estimated from Delhi: ₹4,000–₹6,500

Himachal Pradesh

One pass, two completely different worlds. You begin in the lush, green Kullu valley — forests, rivers, waterfalls. You cross the pass at 14,100 ft and step into the dry, bare, lunar landscape of Lahaul. That dramatic shift in scenery, all in 5 days, is what makes Hampta Pass one of the most memorable treks in India. Add an optional detour to the stunning Chandratal Lake and you have the perfect Himalayan adventure.

Roopkund Trek

Uttarakhand

India's most mysterious trek. At 16,499 ft, there is a glacial lake filled with human skeletons — victims of a sudden catastrophic hailstorm in the 9th century AD. But Roopkund is also home to India's finest alpine meadows: Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal, with Trishul (7,120 m) rising behind them. This is a challenging, 8-day high-altitude trek that rewards experienced trekkers with some of the most dramatic scenery in the Himalaya.

Valley of Flowers

Uttarakhand

A UNESCO World Heritage Site that comes alive every July and August. Over 600 species of wildflowers bloom in this remote Himalayan valley — including the rare Brahmakamal, Himalayan blue poppy, and acres of primula and marsh marigold. The trek itself is easy, the base village of Ghangaria has comfortable guesthouses, and the optional Hemkund Sahib pilgrimage adds cultural depth. Perfect for nature lovers, photographers, and families.

Sar Pass Trek

Himachal Pradesh

The most popular trek in the Kasol and Parvati Valley area. Operated by YHAI (Youth Hostels Association of India), it takes you through the beautiful village of Grahan, dense cedar forests, wide snow meadows, and over a 13,944 ft pass. The highlight is the legendary bum-slide — a long, fast slide down the snow on your backside instead of walking. Pure Himalayan fun, great for beginners and groups.
