Roopkund Trek

Roopkund Trek

Uttarakhand

16,499 ft📅 8 days💰 ₹23,000–₹33,000

India's most mysterious trek. At 16,499 ft, there is a glacial lake filled with human skeletons — victims of a sudden catastrophic hailstorm in the 9th century AD. But Roopkund is also home to India's finest alpine meadows: Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal, with Trishul (7,120 m) rising behind them. This is a challenging, 8-day high-altitude trek that rewards experienced trekkers with some of the most dramatic scenery in the Himalaya.

How to Reach

Nearest railheads are Haridwar or Kathgodam. From Haridwar, catch a bus or shared cab to Tharali, then to Lohajung (the base village) — about 8–10 hours total. Shared cabs from Haridwar to Lohajung cost ₹500–700 per person (shared, going via Gwaldam or Tharali). Alternatively, fly to Pantnagar airport (Uttarakhand) and drive to Lohajung in about 6 hours. Lohajung is at 7,700 ft and is where the trek officially begins.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Lohajung (7,700 ft): Arrive, register at the forest department office, acclimatise. Rest and sleep early.

Day 2 — Lohajung to Didna (5.5 km, ~4 hrs): Descend through apple orchards and oak forest to the small village of Didna (8,000 ft). Overnight at Didna.

Day 3 — Didna to Ali Bugyal (10 km, ~6 hrs): A long climb through dense forest that eventually opens into Ali Bugyal — one of India's largest alpine meadows. The bugyal (high-altitude grassland) at 11,500 ft stretches to the horizon, with Trishul (7,120 m) and Nanda Ghunti (6,309 m) dominating the skyline. Camp here.

Day 4 — Ali Bugyal to Bedni Bugyal (5 km, ~3 hrs): Walk across the open grasslands with sweeping panoramic views. Bedni Bugyal (11,800 ft) has a sacred lake (Bedni Kund) and a small temple dedicated to Nanda Devi.

Day 5 — Bedni Bugyal to Bhagwabasa (6 km, ~4 hrs): Vegetation disappears, replaced by rocks and boulders. The landscape turns alien. Bhagwabasa at 13,500 ft is the last campsite before the summit — nights here drop well below -10°C.

Day 6 — Summit Day: Bhagwabasa to Roopkund (16,499 ft) and back, descend to Bedni Bugyal (8 km, ~6–7 hrs total): Start at 4–5 AM. The climb involves 3,000 ft of gain on rocky, sometimes snow-covered terrain. The lake appears suddenly as you crest the final ridge — hundreds of skeletal remains are visible in the clear glacial water and on surrounding rocks. Return to Bedni Bugyal.

Day 7 — Bedni Bugyal to Wan village (8 km, ~5 hrs): Descend via a different route through Van Vinayak Pass and Patar Nachauni. Wan is a traditional village at 8,100 ft.

Day 8 — Wan to Lohajung (7 km + drive): Short trek down then a drive back to Lohajung. Travel onwards to Haridwar.

What to Pack

• Full winter layering: base thermals, mid fleece, heavy down jacket, wind/waterproof shell

• Trekking boots (waterproof, -20°C rated or with warm insoles)

• Sleeping bag rated to -15°C or lower

• Gaiters and microspikes or crampons (strongly recommended for the Bhagwabasa–Roopkund section)

• Trekking poles (essential on rocky, steep terrain)

• Multiple pairs of gloves, balaclava, face mask

• Trekking pants (warm layer + waterproof outer)

• Full first aid including Diamox, Dexamethasone (carry, use only if directed by doctor)

• High SPF sunscreen and lip balm

• Electrolyte sachets

• 3L+ water carrying capacity

• 50–60L trekking backpack

Best Time to Visit

May–June and September–October. September is the best month — the lake is completely free of snow and the skeletal remains are clearly visible. In May–June the lake is still partially frozen. Avoid July and August (heavy monsoon — the trail becomes dangerously slippery and visibility drops to near zero). The trek is completely closed from November to April.

Where to Stay & Eat

Lohajung has guesthouses and lodges (₹400–900/night, meals extra). Above Lohajung, the entire trek is camping-only — there are no tea houses or guesthouses above Ali Bugyal. Your trek operator provides all tents, sleeping bags, and hot meals at camp. Nights at Bhagwabasa will be well below -10°C — your sleeping bag quality matters enormously here.

Permits & Regulations

Forest department permit is required (₹200 per person at Lohajung). This trek is now strictly regulated — only operators registered with the Wildlife Institute of India (WTI) are allowed to run groups. Independent trekking without a registered guide is not permitted. Do not disturb or remove any skeletal remains at Roopkund — this is a protected heritage site and violation attracts heavy fines.

Fitness Level Required

Difficult. This is a proper high-altitude expedition at 16,499 ft with 8 days of continuous trekking. You need to comfortably manage 10+ km daily on uneven rocky terrain. At least one prior trek above 12,000 ft is strongly recommended. If you have never been above 10,000 ft, do Kedarkantha or Hampta Pass first. Physical preparation: 8–10 weeks of regular training including long runs, stair climbing, and weighted backpack walks.

Safety Tips

• High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) is a life-threatening risk above 14,000 ft. Symptoms: breathlessness at rest, gurgling sound in chest, pink frothy cough, confusion. Descend immediately and call emergency services if this occurs.

• The summit terrain is very loose and rocky — do not rush. A slip at 16,000 ft can have serious consequences.

• Emergency evacuation from Roopkund takes 6–8 hours minimum. Always carry proper insurance that covers helicopter evacuation.

• The pass area is exposed and wind can be severe — always carry extra warm layers at the top regardless of how warm you feel at base camp.

• Do not drink from Roopkund Lake — the water is considered sacred and the quality is unknown.

Photography Tips

• Ali Bugyal at dawn — the vast grassland turns golden with Trishul towering behind: one of the finest landscape compositions in the Indian Himalaya.

• Bedni Kund reflection: the sacred lake with the temple and snow peaks makes a classic shot in calm morning light.

• Roopkund itself — photograph with a wide lens to include the full lake, surrounding ridgeline, and the skeletal remains in context. Do not disturb the bones.

• Descent trail in September–October: autumn colours on the trees are spectacular — warm reds and yellows against white snow peaks.

Full Budget Breakdown

• Delhi to Haridwar (train): ₹300–700

• Haridwar to Lohajung (shared cab): ₹700–900 per person

• Trek operator package (7 nights, all inclusive — mandatory): ₹18,000–24,000

• Helicopter evacuation insurance: ₹1,000–1,500

• Personal gear rental (sleeping bag, gaiters, poles): ₹1,500–2,500

• Lohajung guesthouse (1–2 nights): ₹500–900

• Return transport: ₹700–900

• Emergency buffer: ₹1,500

Total estimated from Delhi: ₹23,000–₹33,000
