Hampta Pass Trek

Hampta Pass Trek

Himachal Pradesh

14,100 ft📅 5 days💰 ₹12,000–₹18,000

One pass, two completely different worlds. You begin in the lush, green Kullu valley — forests, rivers, waterfalls. You cross the pass at 14,100 ft and step into the dry, bare, lunar landscape of Lahaul. That dramatic shift in scenery, all in 5 days, is what makes Hampta Pass one of the most memorable treks in India. Add an optional detour to the stunning Chandratal Lake and you have the perfect Himalayan adventure.

How to Reach

Fly to Bhuntar airport (Kullu) or take an overnight Volvo bus from Delhi to Manali (12–13 hrs from ISBT Kashmere Gate, ₹700–950). Alternatively, train to Chandigarh then overnight bus to Manali. From Manali, hire a cab to Jobra (the trailhead), about 15 km and ₹600–800 one way. Jobra is at 10,400 ft — significantly higher than Manali, so you will feel the altitude immediately.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Drive Manali to Jobra (10,400 ft), trek to Chika (10,800 ft): A short, pleasant walk through birch and maple forest alongside the Rani Nullah river. Chika is a small meadow campsite — perfect for acclimatisation.

Day 2 — Chika to Balu Ka Ghera (12,400 ft): The valley widens and you gain altitude. Several small stream crossings. Glacial moraines and debris appear on the sides. Camp at the base of the pass.

Day 3 — Pass crossing day: Balu Ka Ghera to Hampta Pass (14,100 ft) to Shea Goru (12,700 ft): The toughest and most rewarding day. The climb to the pass involves steep snowfields in June–July. At the summit, the scenery changes entirely — green valley behind, barren brown desert ahead. The descent to Shea Goru on the Lahaul side is steep and takes concentration.

Day 4 — Shea Goru to Chatru (11,100 ft) + Optional Chandratal Lake (14,100 ft): Chandratal (Crescent Lake) is one of the most beautiful high-altitude lakes in India. It is an 8 km round trip from Chatru by jeep track. Worth every step — the deep turquoise water is unforgettable.

Day 5 — Drive from Chatru back to Manali (via Rohtang Pass, ~2 hrs).

What to Pack

• Layered clothing: thermals, fleece or down jacket, windproof/waterproof outer layer

• Waterproof trekking jacket and pants (essential — river crossings and possible rain)

• Waterproof ankle-support trekking boots

• Gaiters (very useful on the snowy pass section in June–July)

• Quick-dry trekking clothing for day use

• Trekking poles (especially helpful on the steep Lahaul side descent)

• Sunscreen SPF 50+, UV sunglasses

• Headlamp with spare batteries

• Diamox and personal first aid kit

• Water bottles with 3L capacity

• 40–50L trekking backpack

Best Time to Visit

June and July are ideal — maximum snow on the pass, the Kullu side is lush green, and the contrast is at its most dramatic. The Chandratal access road usually opens by mid-June. September and early October offer clearer skies and colder temperatures but less snow on the pass. Avoid August (heavy monsoon on the Kullu side) and November onwards (pass closes under heavy snow).

Where to Stay & Eat

Manali has a wide range of hotels and guesthouses for all budgets (₹800–3,500/night). On the Kullu side of the trek, tea houses at Chika and Balu Ka Ghera serve dal, rice, Maggi noodles, and chai (₹100–200 per meal). On the Lahaul side (Shea Goru and Chatru), facilities are minimal — your trek operator will arrange tented camps with a cook. Chatru has a few roadside dhabas.

Permits & Regulations

Indian nationals do not need a special permit for the Hampta Pass trek itself. Foreign nationals require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) if extending the trip into the Spiti Valley beyond Chatru. The ILP can be obtained from the DC office in Manali or Kaza. Carry government-issued ID throughout the trip — there are checkpoints on the Manali–Leh highway.

Fitness Level Required

Moderate. The pass crossing day involves 1,700 ft of altitude gain in 4–5 hours, plus a long steep descent. You should be comfortable trekking 8–10 km daily with a day pack. The river crossings in June require steady footing and confidence in water. Some prior trekking experience is helpful but not essential if you are physically fit.

Safety Tips

• The river crossings on the Kullu side can be fast-moving in early June. Always follow your guide and cross where indicated — not upstream or downstream.

• Weather changes quickly at 14,000 ft. Do not attempt the pass crossing in heavy fog, rain, or snow. Wait it out if needed.

• The descent from Hampta Pass to Shea Goru is steep and loose — use trekking poles and take it slowly.

• Keep warm layers accessible even in summer — nights at Shea Goru drop to 0–5°C in June and below 0°C in September.

• Altitude sickness is possible above 12,000 ft. Ascend slowly and drink plenty of water.

Photography Tips

• The top of the pass offers the most striking "before and after" shot — spin 180° to capture green valley on one side, bare desert mountains on the other.

• Balu Ka Ghera camp at sunset: dramatic mountain walls catch deep orange light.

• Chandratal at golden hour: the still water reflects the sky in deep blue-green — bring a tripod for the best shots.

• River crossings with a fast shutter speed (1/500s or faster) capture the action and water spray well.

Full Budget Breakdown

• Delhi to Manali overnight Volvo bus: ₹700–1,000

• Manali accommodation (1 night): ₹800–1,500

• Trek operator package (4 nights, all inclusive): ₹8,000–12,000

• Chandratal jeep side trip (if doing independently): ₹500–700

• Gear rental: ₹600–1,000

• Food in Manali: ₹600–1,200

• Return bus/transport: ₹700–1,000

Total estimated from Delhi: ₹12,000–₹18,000

Roopkund Trek

Uttarakhand

India's most mysterious trek. At 16,499 ft, there is a glacial lake filled with human skeletons — victims of a sudden catastrophic hailstorm in the 9th century AD. But Roopkund is also home to India's finest alpine meadows: Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal, with Trishul (7,120 m) rising behind them. This is a challenging, 8-day high-altitude trek that rewards experienced trekkers with some of the most dramatic scenery in the Himalaya.

Valley of Flowers

Uttarakhand

A UNESCO World Heritage Site that comes alive every July and August. Over 600 species of wildflowers bloom in this remote Himalayan valley — including the rare Brahmakamal, Himalayan blue poppy, and acres of primula and marsh marigold. The trek itself is easy, the base village of Ghangaria has comfortable guesthouses, and the optional Hemkund Sahib pilgrimage adds cultural depth. Perfect for nature lovers, photographers, and families.

Sar Pass Trek

Himachal Pradesh

The most popular trek in the Kasol and Parvati Valley area. Operated by YHAI (Youth Hostels Association of India), it takes you through the beautiful village of Grahan, dense cedar forests, wide snow meadows, and over a 13,944 ft pass. The highlight is the legendary bum-slide — a long, fast slide down the snow on your backside instead of walking. Pure Himalayan fun, great for beginners and groups.

Kheerganga

Himachal Pradesh

The most rewarding weekend trek in Himachal Pradesh. After a 5–6 hour walk through the gorgeous Parvati Valley forest, you reach a Himalayan meadow at 9,711 ft with natural hot sulphur springs. Soak in the warm pool surrounded by snow peaks and open sky. Mythologically, this is where Lord Shiva meditated for thousands of years. Great for beginners, couples, and anyone who wants a quick, memorable mountain experience.
