Kedarkantha Trek

Kedarkantha Trek

Uttarakhand

12,500 ft📅 6 days💰 ₹10,000–₹15,500

One of the best winter treks in India for beginners. You walk through snow-covered pine forests, camp next to a frozen lake, and climb to a 12,500 ft summit with a full 360° view of the Himalayan peaks. Runs over 6 days and about 23 km total. Well-organised by many trekking operators, so logistics are hassle-free.

How to Reach

Start by getting to Dehradun. From Delhi, overnight sleeper trains (Dehradun Express, Mussoorie Express) take about 6–7 hours and cost ₹350–800 depending on class. From Dehradun ISBT, shared cabs leave for Purola (4.5 hrs, ₹400 per seat) and then continue to Sankri (1.5 hrs more, ₹200 per seat). Total road journey: 6–7 hours. If you are driving yourself, take the Mussoorie–Nainbagh–Purola–Sankri route — about 200 km and 7 hours from Dehradun. Sankri village (6,400 ft) is the base for the trek.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrive Sankri (6,400 ft): Check in, collect forest permits, acclimatise, explore the village. Pack your gear the night before.

Day 2 — Sankri to Juda Ka Talab (6 km, ~4 hrs): Walk through dense oak and rhododendron forests draped in snow. Juda Ka Talab is a small, often frozen lake at 9,100 ft surrounded by tall pines.

Day 3 — Juda Ka Talab to Kedarkantha Base (4 km, ~3 hrs): The treeline opens into snowy meadows. Clear views of Swargarohini (6,252 m) and Bandarpoonch (6,316 m). Base camp at 11,250 ft.

Day 4 — Summit Day (3 km up, ~5 hrs total): Start at 3–4 AM to reach the summit (12,500 ft) by sunrise. The final 500 m is steep but short. At the top, you can see the Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri ranges in all directions. Descend to Hargaon.

Day 5 — Hargaon to Sankri (8 km, ~4 hrs): Long descent through pine forest. Reach Sankri by early afternoon.

Day 6 — Return to Dehradun: Shared cab back; reach by evening.

What to Pack

• Two full sets of thermal inner layers (top and bottom)

• Two fleece mid-layers or a thick sweater

• One down jacket (rated to at least -10°C — mandatory in winter)

• Waterproof outer jacket and trekking pants

• Waterproof ankle-support trekking boots (not sneakers — you will be in deep snow)

• Gaiters (keeps snow out of boots — essential)

• Thin inner gloves + thick outer waterproof gloves

• Woollen hat covering ears and a balaclava

• UV-protection sunglasses

• SPF 50+ sunscreen and lip balm

• Trekking poles (can rent at Sankri for ₹150–200/day)

• Headlamp with spare batteries

• Personal first aid: Diamox (altitude), Ibuprofen, band-aids, blister plasters

• Water bottles (2L minimum) + purification tablets

• High-energy snacks: dry fruits, chocolates, energy bars

• Sleeping bag rated to -10°C (often provided by operator)

Best Time to Visit

December to March for the classic winter snow experience. January and February have the deepest snow — trails are fully white and the summit push is the most dramatic. April and May are good for rhododendron blooms and clear views but with less snow. Avoid July to September (monsoon — trails get very slippery and the experience is poor).

Where to Stay & Eat

In Sankri: GMVN rest house (book online at gmvnl.in), Forest Rest House (₹400–600/night), private homestays and guesthouses (₹500–1,200 with meals). Food is simple and hearty: dal, rice, roti, aloo sabzi, and egg dishes. On the trail itself, all meals are provided by your trek operator — typically packed lunches and hot dinners cooked at camp.

Permits & Regulations

A forest department permit is required and costs ₹150–250 per person. Most trek operators include this in their package price. Carry it with you at all times on the trail. Stick to marked trails — the forest area is protected, and straying off-path is not allowed.

Fitness Level Required

Beginner-friendly. You do not need to be an athlete. If you can walk 6–8 km daily with a light backpack (4–5 kg) without stopping frequently, you are ready. A simple 4–6 week training routine helps: daily 30-minute walks, stair climbing, and light cardio. No prior high-altitude trekking experience is necessary.

Safety Tips

• Altitude sickness (AMS) can affect anyone above 8,000 ft. Watch for headache, nausea, or dizziness. If symptoms worsen, descend immediately.

• Drink 3–4 litres of water per day. Dehydration makes altitude sickness worse.

• Never leave your group. Always stay with your guide.

• Avoid alcohol on the trail — it increases AMS risk significantly.

• Wear sunscreen even on overcast days — UV radiation at altitude is intense and causes burns quickly.

• Keep an eye on your feet: wet boots and extended cold exposure can cause frostbite.

Photography Tips

• Juda Ka Talab at dawn: the frozen lake with mist rising through the snow-covered trees is a stunning composition.

• Base camp at late afternoon: Bandarpoonch and Swargarohini glow amber and gold at sunset — plan your camp shots for this window.

• Summit at sunrise: the 360° panorama catches every major Himalayan range — wide-angle lens recommended.

• Keep your batteries in an inside pocket (cold drains them within 30 minutes at altitude). Carry a spare set.

• Use Night/Pro mode on your phone for the pre-dawn summit ascent shots.

Full Budget Breakdown

• Delhi to Dehradun (sleeper train): ₹350–800

• Dehradun to Sankri (shared cab): ₹550–650

• Trek operator package — 5 nights, all meals, tents, permits: ₹6,500–9,000

• Gear rental (gaiters, poles, sleeping bag) if not included: ₹800–1,500

• Personal snacks and drinks on trail: ₹500–800

• Sankri guesthouse (1 night pre-trek): ₹400–800

• Return transport: ₹600

• Contingency buffer: ₹500

Total estimated from Delhi: ₹10,000–₹15,500

Hampta Pass Trek

Himachal Pradesh

One pass, two completely different worlds. You begin in the lush, green Kullu valley — forests, rivers, waterfalls. You cross the pass at 14,100 ft and step into the dry, bare, lunar landscape of Lahaul. That dramatic shift in scenery, all in 5 days, is what makes Hampta Pass one of the most memorable treks in India. Add an optional detour to the stunning Chandratal Lake and you have the perfect Himalayan adventure.

Roopkund Trek

Uttarakhand

India's most mysterious trek. At 16,499 ft, there is a glacial lake filled with human skeletons — victims of a sudden catastrophic hailstorm in the 9th century AD. But Roopkund is also home to India's finest alpine meadows: Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal, with Trishul (7,120 m) rising behind them. This is a challenging, 8-day high-altitude trek that rewards experienced trekkers with some of the most dramatic scenery in the Himalaya.

Valley of Flowers

Uttarakhand

A UNESCO World Heritage Site that comes alive every July and August. Over 600 species of wildflowers bloom in this remote Himalayan valley — including the rare Brahmakamal, Himalayan blue poppy, and acres of primula and marsh marigold. The trek itself is easy, the base village of Ghangaria has comfortable guesthouses, and the optional Hemkund Sahib pilgrimage adds cultural depth. Perfect for nature lovers, photographers, and families.

Sar Pass Trek

Himachal Pradesh

The most popular trek in the Kasol and Parvati Valley area. Operated by YHAI (Youth Hostels Association of India), it takes you through the beautiful village of Grahan, dense cedar forests, wide snow meadows, and over a 13,944 ft pass. The highlight is the legendary bum-slide — a long, fast slide down the snow on your backside instead of walking. Pure Himalayan fun, great for beginners and groups.

Kheerganga

Himachal Pradesh

The most rewarding weekend trek in Himachal Pradesh. After a 5–6 hour walk through the gorgeous Parvati Valley forest, you reach a Himalayan meadow at 9,711 ft with natural hot sulphur springs. Soak in the warm pool surrounded by snow peaks and open sky. Mythologically, this is where Lord Shiva meditated for thousands of years. Great for beginners, couples, and anyone who wants a quick, memorable mountain experience.
