Sar Pass Trek

Sar Pass Trek

Himachal Pradesh

13,944 ft📅 5 days💰 ₹11,000–₹14,500

The most popular trek in the Kasol and Parvati Valley area. Operated by YHAI (Youth Hostels Association of India), it takes you through the beautiful village of Grahan, dense cedar forests, wide snow meadows, and over a 13,944 ft pass. The highlight is the legendary bum-slide — a long, fast slide down the snow on your backside instead of walking. Pure Himalayan fun, great for beginners and groups.

How to Reach

Kasol is the starting point for this trek. From Delhi, take an overnight bus to Bhuntar (12–13 hrs from ISBT Kashmere Gate, ₹700–950 Volvo). From Bhuntar, shared taxis run to Kasol in about 45 minutes (₹60–80 per seat). The trek is operated exclusively by YHAI — you must register online at yhai.org before travelling. Group departures happen every 3–4 days during the season (April to June). Joining date and batch details are confirmed at registration.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Kasol to Grahan village (9 km, ~5 hrs): The trail starts from Kasol market and immediately enters the forested Parvati Valley. It climbs steadily through dense deodar cedar forest. Grahan is a beautiful car-free village at 7,900 ft — traditional Himachali stone houses, apple trees, and very friendly locals. Homestays and YHAI tents available.

Day 2 — Grahan to Min Thach (7 km, ~4 hrs): Forest thins as altitude increases. Snow appears on the trail by late April. Min Thach is a meadow campsite at 10,200 ft with the first clear views of the surrounding snow peaks.

Day 3 — Min Thach to Nagaru (5 km, ~3 hrs): Short but steep climb to Nagaru at 11,400 ft. Snow is deep and all around. You camp directly under the pass — clear views of the Sar Pass ridge above you.

Day 4 — Nagaru to Sar Pass (13,944 ft) to Biskeri Thach — the bum-slide day: Climb to the pass in the morning (2–3 hrs). Stunning 360° views at the top. Then begins the famous bum-slide descent — a long, controlled slide down the snow slope on your backside. YHAI runs this section in a supervised way and it is safe. Everyone does it. Continue descending to Barshaini and drive back to Kasol.

Day 5 — Buffer / free day in Kasol: Explore Kasol, visit the Parvati River, or take a day trip to Chalal or Tosh village.

What to Pack

• Warm layers: thermals, fleece, down jacket

• Waterproof trekking jacket and pants

• Waterproof trekking boots (ankle support)

• Gaiters — absolutely essential, the trail has very deep snow

• Multiple pairs of warm wool socks

• Gloves (warm, waterproof)

• Woollen hat or beanie

• Sunscreen SPF 50+ and UV sunglasses

• Trekking poles (optional but helpful)

• Personal first aid kit

• Water bottle (2L)

• Headlamp

• Waterproof dry bag or rain cover for your backpack

• Waterproof pants are especially important for the bum-slide — you will get wet

Best Time to Visit

May and June are the best months — the snow is at its deepest and the bum-slide is at its most fun. By late June, the snow starts melting and the experience loses some of its magic. July brings monsoon rains to the Parvati Valley and YHAI typically stops operations until September when conditions improve.

Where to Stay & Eat

YHAI provides tented accommodation throughout — all tents, sleeping bags, and meals are included in the registration fee. The food is simple, nutritious, and surprisingly good given the conditions. Before the trek, Kasol has plenty of cafes and guesthouses (₹600–1,500/night). Grahan village has small homestays that serve excellent local Himachali food with meals (₹500–800 including food). The local thukpa (noodle soup) and rajma-chawal are highly recommended.

Permits & Regulations

Forest permits are included in the YHAI registration fee — they handle all paperwork. Register online at yhai.org and bring your registration confirmation and a government ID. Do not attempt this trek with an unofficial operator — only YHAI is authorised to run groups on the Sar Pass trail. Follow YHAI rules: no littering, no alcohol on the trail, lights out at 9 PM in camp.

Fitness Level Required

Easy to moderate. The trails are well-marked and YHAI groups always have qualified guides. No prior trekking experience is needed. The bum-slide requires no skill — just a willingness to let go. If you can walk 8–10 km with a light backpack, you are ready. YHAI treks have a strong group culture so slower trekkers are always supported.

Safety Tips

• Register exclusively through YHAI — unofficial operators on this route have had safety incidents.

• The bum-slide is controlled and supervised. Follow YHAI staff instructions and do not slide faster or wider than indicated.

• Snow blindness is a real risk at the pass — always wear UV-protection sunglasses on the pass day, even in overcast conditions.

• The pass is at 14,000 ft — ascend slowly and take breaks. Do not rush ahead of the group.

• Keep trekking poles accessible on the ascent but stow them safely before the bum-slide section.

Photography Tips

• The bum-slide section is great for action shots — have a friend ready with their camera at the bottom to capture you mid-slide.

• Grahan village at dawn: smoke from chimneys, apple trees, and snow-capped peaks behind the traditional stone houses — a perfect Himalayan village composition.

• Min Thach and Nagaru camps: clear starry skies on clear nights — try 10–20 second long exposures for astrophotography.

• Sar Pass summit: the view back down into the Parvati Valley is dramatic — lush green gorge thousands of feet below surrounded by white peaks.

Full Budget Breakdown

• Delhi to Bhuntar overnight bus: ₹750–950

• Bhuntar to Kasol taxi: ₹80–100

• YHAI trek registration (5 nights, all meals, tents, permits): ₹7,500–8,000

• Pre/post trek stay in Kasol (2 nights): ₹1,200–2,000

• Food and cafe in Kasol: ₹500–1,000

• Personal gear if needed: ₹400–800

• Return bus to Delhi: ₹750–950

Total estimated from Delhi: ₹11,000–₹14,500

But Roopkund is also home to India's finest alpine meadows: Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal, with Trishul (7,120 m) rising behind them. This is a challenging, 8-day high-altitude trek that rewards experienced trekkers with some of the most dramatic scenery in the Himalaya.
